Enhanced Katori long sword #1361 (sold inv # 11101)

This bokken is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, which for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density. Specific to the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, this unique weapon has a pronounced koshizori curvature with moderately slender profile and a very fast feel. It has ideal balance, side to side straightness and overall geometry. On the omote side is a bold and energetic flame pattern extending into the tip but on the ura side, is a startling change to a calm and restrained flowing grain, hence its inscribed name "Zanshin", expressive of extreme energy, victory, quickly turning to the calm focus of the remaining mind. Stands are available separately.

Enhanced Iwama long sword #1461 (sold)

Made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory which for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. This bokken is a heavy weapon and a perfect match for the martial artist seeking an Iwama bokken with lively grain patterns but still understated—at least from a distance. Close examination reveals its colors which include ivories, tans, dark browns and unlikely streaks of an almost light purple hue. This bokken is exceptionally beautiful, strong with perfect Iwama character of forward balance, shallow torii-zori curvature, side to side straightness and exceptional overall geometry. The iwama bokken is not available with tsuba so please don't order that as an option. Stands are available separately.

Enhanced Shinto long sword #1479

This bokken is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, which for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. This unique weapon has a deeper, torii-zori curvature, characteristic of katana where the curvature enables a simultaneous drawing and striking motion. In this bokken, the deeper curvature occurred as a stroke of luck in the enhancement process (which involves drying, vacuum, pressure, and heating) in the exact plane of vertical axis and is reminiscent of a forged sword gaining perfect curvature in the tempering process. The inscription reads "one mind one strike." If you'd like an additional inscription, we can do that on the right bevel, across from the existing inscription. Please follow the directions in the "order this bokken" link for this and other options. The color pattern is light gold/ivory and the grain is extremely dense vertical orientation. Stands are available separately.

Enhanced Suburito #1480 (sold inv# 14855)

This suburito is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, which for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. It begs the question: why? Because of its densified state, it achieves extraordinary weight without being overly huge and without being metal. While our standard suburito fully addresses the need for practice swinging (that's what "suburito" means, basic swinging), this takes things to another level. Even though it looks like an immense club, suburito aren't intended for contact. It's a bit hard to imagine what it would be like on the receiving end of this and its a bit hard to understand it in general (it exists due to customer demand, not from our playbook). The enhanced version is also extraordinarily difficult to make and it certainly won't be a standard offering but here it is: one of a kind and probably not repeated, this one is perfect in geometry with a beautiful reddish tan omote side and ivory ura side. It weighs over 3 pounds. Suburito cannot be fitted with tsuba so please don't choose that option on the ordering page.

Enhanced kenjutsu 1483 (sold inv#14873)
This bokken is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, which for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. We only use the most extraordinary wood for the enhancement process and this is no exception: highly figured, perfectly quarter sawn tiger-stripe L7 heart hickory with a flash of white on the top of the blade. Despite it's high density, this wooden sword is very thin and very fast. Amidst laughter, there was some debate in the workshop regarding a potential name—the "toothpick of death?" Written in kanji on the left bevel, omote side, just in front of the tsuba position, the inscription appears in a thin hand despite the burning sylus set at maximum heat. It reads a phrase more subtle: kureba mukae sareba okuru, "when the opponent arrives, welcome them in; when they depart, send them away." Please follow the directions in the "order this bokken" link for this and other options. Stands are available separately.

Enhanced shinto (Raiju)

This bokken is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, whch for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. We only use the most extraordinary wood for the enhancement process and this is no exception: mostly white with some light tan, looking like a subtle, long, undulating temper line on the ura side but the omote side, it has the most unusual spiked figure. This pattern is caused by what's known as "mineral streak" in the wood. Here, it looks like the claw marks of a wild animal. Despite it's high density, this wooden sword is a bit thinner than our standard shinto or aikiken medium profiles. It's very fast. All of our enhanced work has high density (it sinks in water). This high density is the key factor in the feeling of "presence" and allows for a beautiful balance and sword like quality.

The inscription in kanji reads "Raiju"

Raiju is associated withj Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning. While this mythical creature is usually reserved, it becomes wild, and leaps about in trees and fields during thunderstorms. Things struck by lightning are said to have been scratched by Raiju's claws.

Enhanced iwama (little difference)

View from top, looking at the spine.

This bokken is made of tough, ultra dense enhanced Appalachian hickory, whch for martial art purposes, is vastly superior in all regards in hardness, strength and density to all other wood. We only use the most extraordinary wood for the enhancement process and this is one of the finest examples: This Iwama style wooden sword came from the most intractable piece of wood in recent memory. It didn't want to give up and after multiple tear outs and an immense fight, it finally emerged to its final shape. Now, it has a refined, polished look with crazy character underneath its glass smooth surface. The shape is slighly irregular. You can see that the curve isn't perfect but nonetheless, this bokken, with all of its wrongness, could not be improved. It's straight side to side, extremely dense and has a feeling of immense power. While making it, it had this distinct feeling that it it could sail through anything. Now it its polished state, that aspect of it is certaintly there but a bit more hidden.

Here's how it got its name: I was asleep in my tent one night in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It was about 4AM when I heard an erratic snuffling, heavy-breathing sound that was loud and I knew it came from a very large bear. Not wanting to die entangled in tent fabric, I crawled outside and stood up.
In the moonlight, about ten feet away, was the enormous creature, swinging side to side on all fours and then lifting a bit onto two as it judged the air around it. I looked at it and it moved its head sideways and looked right back and for a moment we were locked into each other. The meaning of its look was very clear: “You make little difference in this situation.” It then disappeared into the night.

I think of this bokken in comparison to others. It’s like the bear. An encounter with something else matters little. Inscribed on the omote side of the tsuka in large script is, “little difference.”

Please follow the directions in the "order this bokken" link for this and other options. Stands are available separately. Please don't order a tsuba with this bokken as the design doesn't accommodate tsuba.
